A school in Gwinett County, GA is getting some serious backlash from parents after the school sent home a math homework assignment that referenced slavery and beatings.
The homework assignment came about after three third grade teachers gave a lesson on Fredrick Douglass. The teachers were trying to integrate the lesson about Douglass into the math homework. Once the parents saw the homework assignment, some were shocked at the nature and language of the assignment.
One of the questions on the homework was “Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?” Another problem read, “If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?”
The Principal of the school is looking into the matter and exploring whether the teachers may need some additional training. Administrators do not feel the teachers who sent the homework assignment had any bad intent and that it was not racially motivated.
